Aranxa Ortega

Mariana Aranxa Ortega was born and raised in Veracruz, Mexico. At the age of nineteen she relocated to the United States to pursue higher education. She received a BFA in Painting from the University of Houston in 2015. Her work is influenced by the people, places, and experiences of her childhood in Mexico, exploring memories that evoke feelings of nostalgia, confusion, sadness, and anger, often simultaneously. Ortega extracts this subject matter from her childhood pictures, specifically 90’s film photography that solidly grounds her subjects in a time and place in history. To her, these photographs are the physical manifestations of sometimes otherwise forgotten memories. She finds inspiration in contemporary artists who create paintings where realism, abstraction and expression all coexist. Aranxa Ortega started living in Paris a year ago to further pursue a career in painting.
